Gwangju Sightseeing Information

1. Mudeungsan Unesco Global Geopark

Mudeung Mountain, which, on April 12th, 2018, became certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark, is the main landmark of Gwangju, and covers an area 75.425 kilometers in size, with a peak elevation of 1,187 meters above sea level. Towards the summit of the mountain, hikers can find Seoseokdae and Ibseokdae – interlocking columnar joints, formed by the rapid cooling of hot lava over 70 million years ago, and now renowned for their great natural beauty and geological value. Mudeung Mountain’s gentle slope and glorious scenery attract large numbers of hikers, with visitors also being drawn to the numerous museums and cafés which can be found at the entrance of the mountain.

2. Mugaksa

Mugaksa Temple can be found in the Sangmu district area at the center of Gwangju, and has become a much-loved tourist destination that transcends religion. The temple offers an area of calm and tranquility for visitors to the city, and in the past was chosen as a dinner venue during the 2015 Summer Universiade held in Gwangju. A book café is also located next to the temple, and visitors may also attain inner calm at Mugaksa by taking part in a temple stay.

3. Seochang Local Culture Village

Seochang Village was first formed in the mid-Joseon dynasty, and was the birthplace of General Kim Se-geun, a leader of the righteous army during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The village was rebuilt as a traditional Hanok Village between 1998 and 2002, and the Seochang Traditional Hanok Culture Experience Center at the village’s entrance offers weekly cultural experiences, including traditional culture lectures, rural life experiences, folk games, weekend break culture classes, and etiquette academies.
